Since our founding in 1994, Big Delicious Planet has evolved from catering backstage for thousands of the world’s most popular musicians to a certified green farm-to-table operation with a lush urban farm. Throughout BDP’s history, our passion has been creating unforgettable experiences for our clients, whether it’s catering a stylish, luxury wedding, designing a one-of-a-kind event in the middle of our own urban farm, or feeding globally-inspired cuisine to employees of the world’s most recognized brands. Delicious, high-quality food, and eye-catching presentations have remained the focus of our catering from day one.

Innovative

In 2012 we did what no other caterer was doing: we started our own urban farm right next to our catering kitchen to grow our own food. Our bespoke menus are inspired by the fresh, organic ingredients we grow right here, and the crops we’ll be harvesting at the time of an event. In addition to our own crops, we’re committed to responsible sourcing, buying from as many local purveyors and farms as possible. In 2013, BDP was the first caterer in the nation to receive 4 Star Certified Green Restaurant status by the Green Restaurant Association. Our sustainability program far exceeds most caterers and restaurants, and we’ve held the title of “Greenest Caterer in America” since 2013.

A Hidden Gem

Tucked away between unmarked warehouses and cool loft buildings, Big Delicious Planet's cafe, the Canteen, has become a hotspot for the creative entrepreneurs of West Town's industrial area. Pop in for a quick breakfast burrito and freshly brewed local Metric Coffee (they're a few blocks away) or come by and enjoy one of our fabulous salad or panini outside at our garden's farm table when the weather is nice.

Our cafe, the Canteen, has reopened after a 4 year hiatus! We’re excited to see old friends and meet new ones! Please be patient as we get our groove back. We’re still finishing a few things in our newly renovated, expanded space. More items will be added as we go!

Zero miles

When Heidi founded BDP in 1994, she never imagined that BDP would one day have their own urban farm on three city lots with five beehives. In 2012, she started a small garden with eight beds next to BDP’s catering kitchen with the intention of growing a few vegetables and herbs. She quickly expanded it when she saw potential for growing more food on site. We now have 77 raised beds where we’re growing dozens of vegetables, fruits, herbs and edible flowers––all 15 feet from our kitchen door. Our catering menus are inspired by the crops we grow each year, and the three seasons we’ll harvest them. It’s pretty remarkable that we can plan a wedding menu based on our spring, summer and fall harvest. Many of our custom wedding and event menus have over two dozen of our own organic crops incorporated into the menu!

Sustainable Catering

Being a sustainable caterer is a thoughtful and intentional process. In order to know how we are doing and to be transparent with our clients and customers, we decided to have our catering/cafe kitchen and operation thoroughly vetted by a third party. In 2013, the Green Restaurant Association awarded us the highest green rating they had ever awarded to a catering company––a 4 Star Certified Green Rating. Along with the 4 Star Certified Green rating, we were named the "Greenest Caterer in America." 11 years later, we still hold this rating and title! We are the only 4 Star Certified Green Restaurant in Illinois! We're proud of our commitment to the environment in all aspects of our catering and cafe operation, and continue to improve our conservation efforts and our purchasing practices.
